    What Is a Migraine?

A migraine is much more than a bad headache. It is a neurological condition that typically causes a throbbing, one-sided head pain, often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. Some people also experience an aura before the headache begins, such as flashing lights, blind spots, or tingling. Migraines can last anywhere from a few hours to several days, and they can be genuinely debilitating, forcing people to miss work, family events, and everyday life.

    Common Triggers to Watch For

Migraine triggers vary from person to person, but common culprits include stress and the let-down after stress, poor or irregular sleep, skipped meals, dehydration, bright or flickering lights, strong smells, hormonal changes in women, and certain foods and drinks such as aged cheese, processed meats, caffeine, and red wine. Keeping a simple diary of your attacks alongside what you ate, how you slept, and your stress levels can reveal patterns you might not otherwise notice, helping you avoid your personal triggers.

    Finding the Right Relief

Over-the-counter painkillers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol can be effective for mild migraines, especially when taken early in an attack. For more severe or frequent migraines, specific treatments called triptans may be recommended, which work by targeting the changes in the brain that cause migraine pain. Anti-sickness medication can also help if nausea is a major feature of your attacks. It is important not to overuse acute painkillers, as taking them too often can actually cause medication-overuse headaches, making the problem worse.

    How Our Pharmacists Can Help

Our pharmacists are trained to help you manage migraines safely. We can review your symptoms, discuss your triggers, and advise on the most appropriate relief options, including whether a triptan may be suitable for you. We will also check that your current approach is not causing rebound headaches and can suggest lifestyle adjustments that reduce attack frequency. If your headaches are changing in pattern, becoming more frequent, or not responding to treatment, we will advise you to see your GP for further assessment.
